Returning to work after Maternity Leave by Aimee Boydens

I’m Aimee, a Mum and full time Head of People for a healthcare charity in East Sussex. I went through Mummyshock and have since returned to work. The process for me has been supported and I have enjoyed getting that part of me back (and going to the toilet in peace!). I still saw some challenges including crisis of confidence, change in work pattern (twice) and childcare provider all within the first 6 months of returning to work so I hope the following pieces of information will help support you as you return to work. Important entitlements whilst on Maternity Leave:

  1. You accrue annual leave whilst on Maternity (can be useful to tag onto the end of your maternity leave to have more time off)

  2. You are entitled to 10 KIT (Keeping In Touch days) which are paid in full for the whole day even if you work part day

  3. If you want to change your agreed return to work date you need to give at least 8 weeks’ notice

  4. If you want to change your work pattern/hours when you return to work you should complete a flexible working application as soon as possible and speak to your line manager

Returning to work things to think about:

  • What childcare options suits what you need? There are so many options, look at different types and make a decision on what feels right. Don’t leave it to the last minute.

  • Once you have sorted childcare ensure you look into Tax Free Childcare where the Government contribute £2 for every £8 you put into the account to pay for childcare. Tax-Free Childcare - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

  • If possible, can you do the 1st day of childcare when you are off work as it can be emotional. If you are at work could you work from home that day? Or let your manager know the situation. It is usually absolutely fine. 😊

  • Speak with your line manager openly. What support you need from work? Do you want to do a phased return (go back for a few days per week to begin with) to get used to a new routine?

  • If you are still breastfeeding, you have a right to a space and storage for you to express and keep your milk (the bathroom is not an acceptable space!) Please ask for this if this is what you need and put a plan in place.

  • If you are struggling when you return to work this is normal but ask for support in the workplace (is there an EAP employee Assistance Programme). I always recommend asking managers to talk through all the changes that have happened whilst you have been off.

Looking after yourself: 

  • Children do pick up bugs when they start childcare this is normal. You are entitled to Dependency leave in these situations. Legally this is unpaid time but lots of employers offer a number of paid days. Check your Company policy.

  • Change of routine and getting back to work can be exhausting so be kind to yourself. Don’t pressure getting back to exercising etc.

  • What support do you need when adding work back into your life? It can be lots of different things, I got a tumble dryer to help with the washing!

  • Make sure you build time into the week for you, not just work and family time.
